Shekinah Lane is a story—at times delightful and humorous and at other times sad and disturbing—that chronicles a life filled with joys and struggles. In it the author, Pat Strickland, addresses the theme of the power of dwelling “in the secret place (the Shekinah glory) of the most High God.” Her book has many strengths. The writing style is clear, direct, and conversational which allows her to make her religious observations without burdening the text with sermonizing. Humor is another source of strength throughout the book. Strickland is a serious person who does not take herself too seriously. The book grows increasingly dark as illness and other difficulties intrude. Her husband’s Parkinson’s disease, serious injuries, blackouts, as well as her tension with family members over religion, put a strain on the family, as do the hours she spends on her job as registrar for Young Harris College, but she presents these difficulties honestly and patiently. She ends with chapters on Shekinah Lane, the home that she and her husband built in the Georgia mountains, which becomes a convincing symbol of the glory of God on earth.
